Wordpress Tutorials - Creating Text
Links
Using "FCKEditor"
Wordpress
comes with a default text editor.
However BIS clients usually are using a
more advanced editor called "FCKeditor"
that I installed when I first set up
your new wordpress website.
One of
the more common things we need to do in
our websites is create links to other
sites or files. Usually we do this by
creating some text that someone can
click on. So let's take a look at
how it's done.
Let's
first just log into your Wordpress
Website and open a page where you would
like to create a link to another website
or a file within your website.

1.The
first thing you have to do is decide
where your link will be. Sometimes
we link a few words within our content
or we add a list of links. Once
you've chosen what text to link, just
highlight that bit of text. (you
highlight text by holding down your
shift key, then dragging your curser
over the text you want to highlight)
2.
With the text highlighted, just go up to
the editor menu and click the "add link"
icon. It looks sort of like a
globe with a little tank tread.
When you click it a window dialog box
will pop up. (see above)
3.
To add a link to an outside site, just
put the URL in the box under "URL".
Pretty simple. Just click "OK" and
that's it. Now you have a link to
another website.
Linking at document - You can also
link to a file within your own website
the same way. Let's say you have a
pdf file that you've uploaded.
Well, all you need to do is put the URL
or web address to that file in your
site. If you used wordpress to upload
the document, the link will look
something like this:
http://www.yoursite.com/wp-content/uploads/yourfile.pdf
(just put this in as the URL)

4.
But what if you want the website you
just linked to open in a new browser
window so people don't actually leave
your website? Well, have a look at
that "Links" box again. The second
tab says "Target". Before you
click "ok" for your new link, click
"Target" then the drop-down. Now
you will see the second choice is "New
Window". That will open the link
in a new browser window and leave your
website in the current window below.
We can talk more about the other choices
there later.

3. But
what if you want to link an email
address instead of another website?
Well, Highlight the text, Click the add
link Icon, as before, then before you
enter the email address click "link
type" and choose "Email". Simple.
Enter the email address then, click ok.
Hopefully this will get you started with
adding images to your Wordpress pages.
I will be adding other tutorials as I
have time. Good Luck!!! |
